Saige and I recently finished reading a book together called “Change How You See Everything: Asset Based Thinking,” a book for teenagers with the mission of equipping its readers to learn how to focus on the positive instead of the negative in every life situation. It wasn’t really anything either of us hadn’t heard or already believed, but I loved how well organized the book was in restating truths that need to be repeated and reinforced in both of us.

A lot has happened in my personal life since my last public entry on Father’s Journey, so the purpose of this article is to catch anyone up who has been following it. I have been journaling privately almost daily, but haven’t posted anything publicly for almost five months!

After really giving it a try and investing nine months in counseling, my marriage to Gayle ended last November.  What happened?

Before Alex, these three were the “babies” of the family. They were born within a seemingly stable marriage, and all three still appear to be well adjusted and happy. Our two separations, while I’m certain they had some impact on all of our children, left no visible (as of yet) long term damage on these three. Each of them are to this day very sweet and special, and interestingly each of them have varying levels of delayed development.

Family Profile Part 1: Alexander the Great

As always, this is all 100% true, with only the names being changed to protect the privacy of all involved…

Alex is my youngest child, and is absolutely amazing! His smile will light up a city block, and he’s so active and very silly. His biological dad is an Ultimate Fighting Championship coach, and I fear that Alex may have picked up a bit of this in his genes lol.  He’s tough as nails, happy as a kid (or my wife) in a candy shop, and very handsome. Bio-daddy is a Philippino, so Alex’s skin complexion is a bit darker than most of the kids, but not enough to warrant concern from judgmental passers-by. How this amazing boy came to be is a story worth sharing…

I first met Gayle, my future wife and her son, Daniel in the summer of 1994. I was a 19 year old holier-than-thou church kid, and she was a beautiful, 18 year old bad-girl with a great sense of humor. For those of you that remember the TV series “Darma and Greg”, many comparisons and jokes have been made about me the nerd and Gayle the free spirit over the years.

Who am I trying to reach? Well, I’m trying to connect with fellow imperfect men trying to be good fathers, their spouses and significant others looking to help and motivate their kid’s dad, and young men and couples who are expecting or contemplating having a child in the future.
